Disclaimer: If you haven’t seen the movie Black Panther yet, this post does make reference to the movie (obviously). However, it doesn’t contain any plot spoilers.

Disclaimer #2: This isn’t a science lesson. I promise.

After becoming king of Wakanda, we find T’Challa (Black Panther) and his teenage sister Shuri in a room full of advanced technology developed by Shuri herself. Shuri explains to T’Challa that his new and improved Black Panther suit is not only bulletproof, but it absorbs and stores the energy from any hits, bumps or falls he may take. The stored energy can then be released and used to help him defeat his adversary. The Black Panther uses this feature of his suit several times throughout the movie.

So what does the Black Panther’s suit have to do with anything?

Well, I’m glad you asked.

As humans, we take a lot of hits, bumps, and falls and they aren’t always in a physical sense. We have to deal with toxic people, unemployment, underemployment, the death of loved one, overdue bills, disappointment, failed relationships, loneliness, and rejection just to name a few. Many of us take all that life throws at us with a smile. We bounce back from situations in the blink of an eye. To the world, we come across as bulletproof. We’re unbothered or we’re ‘fine’. Although the hits may not damage us physically, at times we are prone to carrying around the negative energy with us on the inside. Eventually, that energy is released back into the world in some form.

While the Black Panther has a handle on the energy surrounding him, many of us mere mortals do not. We have to be mindful of the energy we accept, store and release.

Accepted Energy

Although the Black Panther is prepared for battle, he never truly knows when he might have to fight. We may be prepared for what life may bring, but we can’t control everything that happens to us. We can control who and what we allow into our space.

In order to reach and maintain the quality of life that we want, we have to be intentional about the energy we accept. I’m a firm believer in the statement “what you allow, is what will continue.” If our life isn’t going the way we want it to, we have to take the time to evaluate why. Oftentimes, our biggest downfall is our failure to remove people and situations from our lives that bring more negative energy than positive energy.

Stored Energy

Toxic people and situations may not seem like a big deal. However, if we aren’t careful, we can subconsciously start to take on the weight of the negativity surrounding us. If we walk around holding on to the negative perspectives that others have of us, then we start to believe it. The thoughts we have about ourselves determines how we interact with the world. The energy we store in our mindset is the energy we use to make decisions. If we use the positive thoughts as fuel for our future, then our stored energy can drive us wherever we desire to go.

Released Energy

WE HAVE TO RELEASE THE ENERGY WE STORE (for the people in the back)

Energy can only be stored for so long before it has to be released. When it comes to positive energy, we should release it freely and frequently. As for negative energy, we have to be careful how and when we release it.

For example, during a thunderstorm, it’s possible that we may experience a power surge. A tv that is plugged into an outlet may be damaged because the amount of electric energy it receives during a power surge is more than the tv is equipped to handle.  It’s okay to be strong, but strength doesn’t mean we keep everything inside of us. We often see people reach their breaking point because they failed to let go of the negative thoughts and experiences they had in the past. They end up like a broken tv after a power surge because they kept holding on to the negative energy they should have released a long time ago.

Releasing negative energy is necessary. There are many healthy ways to release negative energy. Praying, talking to someone, crying, writing and working out are a few options. Unlike the Black Panther, we don’t have to release all of our energy at once. It is a process.

A little transparency and a challenge

The past few months of my life haven’t exactly been the greatest. I’ll admit, there are some days that I’ve released more negative energy than positive energy. I realized that I need to get back on track. As a result, I am now making a better effort to seek and embrace the positive aspects of my life. I’m on a personal journey to use positive energy to power my life. In order to do that, I’m making a challenge for myself.

  1. I will make sure that I surround myself with positive people. I’ll also ignore gossip and negative conversations.
  2.  I’m taking inventory of the thoughts I’m carrying around with me. I’m creating positive affirmations to counteract the negative thoughts.
  3. I’m finding a way to release the positive energy inside of me and a healthy way to release the negative energy.

I challenge anyone reading this to do the same.

Energy cannot be created or destroyed. It can only be transferred or changed from one form to another.
